First responders in Australia are facing a surge in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms linked to intensified climate disasters, according to recent reports from emergency services and mental health organisations. The 2024 season of bushfires in Victoria and floods in Queensland has exacerbated trauma exposure for paramedics, firefighters, and police, with preliminary data indicating higher rates of hypervigilance, nightmares, and avoidance behaviours.

Experts note that repeated exposure to catastrophic events compounds cumulative trauma, distinguishing it from single-incident PTSD. A study from the Black Dog Institute highlights that first responders experience PTSD prevalence up to 20 per cent, rising with climate volatility. Comorbid conditions such as anxiety and depression are common, affecting operational readiness and personal wellbeing.
