Childhood Trauma Affects 42% of Australian Adults
Prevalence data show childhood trauma exposure in over eight million Australians, linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, substance use, and suicide attempts.

A nationally representative Australian study estimates that 42% of adults – approximately 8.25 million people – experienced at least one potentially traumatic event before age 18 (1). These include serious accidents, violence, or abuse.
Exposure correlates with a 50% increased risk of mental health or substance use disorders, including anxiety, depression, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). More than one in ten affected individuals may attempt suicide over their lifetime. Physical health conditions also show associations, highlighting trauma’s systemic reach (1).
Experts note these findings emphasise prevention and early intervention to mitigate long-term burdens. Comorbidities like substance use often compound challenges, requiring integrated support.
In the Australian context, this underscores the need for enhanced trauma-informed care in health systems to address widespread impacts.
