Intensive 8-Day Programme Shows Promise for PTSD, CPTSD

New clinical trial data indicate an 8-day intensive programme combining prolonged exposure, EMDR, and psychoeducation yields strong symptom reduction for treatment-resistant PTSD and CPTSD.

Intensive treatment programmes (ITP) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD) condense evidence-based therapies into short, focused periods, potentially reducing dropout and treatment duration. A recent clinical trial evaluated an 8-day ITP against usual care for patients with treatment-resistant PTSD or CPTSD (1).

The programme incorporated prolonged exposure, eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), physical activity, and psychoeducation. Results showed significant symptom reductions, with 73.3% of participants no longer meeting PTSD criteria at 3-month follow-up. Dropout rates remained low, and effects were comparable to longer protocols while shortening overall commitment (1).

This format addresses barriers like time constraints and psychological burden, offering socioeconomic benefits through fewer sessions. Views differ on long-term maintenance, but evidence suggests sustained gains up to 12 months in similar intensive models.

In Australia, where access to timely mental health care can vary, such condensed approaches could complement existing services, particularly for first responders or veterans facing comorbid conditions. Further multi-site trials are needed to confirm generalisability.
