Brain Stimulation Reduces PTSD Intrusions

Preliminary findings from Tel Aviv University suggest a noninvasive brain stimulation technique can significantly reduce intrusive memories in people with post-traumatic stress disorder. (1)

The study involved ten adults with PTSD. Researchers used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) targeted at brain regions connected to the hippocampus, guided by individual fMRI scans. Stimulation occurred after deliberate reactivation of the traumatic memory during its reconsolidation window, delivered in five weekly sessions. (2)

Participants experienced a marked decrease in the frequency and intensity of intrusive symptoms. Follow-up brain imaging showed reduced connectivity between the hippocampus and stimulated areas, indicating measurable neural changes. (1)

The approach targets the root mechanisms of traumatic memories rather than symptoms alone. Researchers note it could become a short, accessible adjunct to existing therapies, particularly valuable given rising PTSD rates in conflict-affected populations. A larger controlled trial is underway. (2)
