PTSD Linked to Faster Brain Aging

New research on 9/11 responders shows PTSD associated with advanced brain age, independent of other factors, raising concerns for cognitive health.

Individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder who responded to the World Trade Center attacks display biological markers of accelerated brain aging, according to a study published in Translational Psychiatry. (1)

Researchers examined MRI data from responders and found that those with PTSD had a higher predicted brain age relative to chronological age compared with those without the condition. The association persisted after controlling for other health factors. (2)

The findings suggest chronic PTSD may contribute to premature neurological aging, potentially increasing risks for cognitive decline and dementia later in life. This builds on growing evidence that trauma has measurable, lasting effects on brain structure and function.
